A vacation to Myrtle Beach is exciting in itself with more than 60 miles of beaches, at least 1500 restaurants and a plenitude of entertainment and recreation to fully satisfy the most discriminating of travelers. But, add in the opportunity to play in a competitive golf event paired with a family member and we think you have a must-do destination. Mark your calendars for July 22-24, 2010 when fathers and sons unite in "The Seaside Golf Capital of the World" for the 13th Annual Martin's PGA TOUR Superstore National Father & Son Team Classic. The tournament is open to any father/son type relationship, from grandfathers and grandsons to uncles and nephews. Teams are flighted based on USGA handicap and "sandbaggers" beware.
The tournament committee will go to great lengths to protect the integrity of this event. In addition to the tournament gift package, some of the finest companies in the golf industry have become 'friends of the classic.' Titleist, TaylorMade, Belding-Sports, Sterling Cut Glass are but a few of the companies adding a wealth of gifts and prizes. Special thanks go out to Martin's PGA TOUR Superstore, Marina Inn at Grande Dunes, Coca-Cola, Powerade, Hertz, Centex Homes, Myrtle Beach Trips, and AHEAD for the strong support they give this event.
Last year's 54-hole competition drew players from 44 states and 8 foreign countries -- 28 flights in all. Past "Fathers of the Year" include such names as Lou Holtz, head football coach of The University of South Carolina; Jim Hodges, the South Carolina Governor; Happ Lathrop, the Executive Director of the South Carolina Golf Association, Dal Shealy, the President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Bobby Richardson, 1960 World Series Most Valuable Player.
The tournament committee remains committed to bringing participants only the highest quality golf experience Myrtle Beach has to offer. This year’s tournament host sites include Barefoot Resort & Golf, Farmstead Golf Links, Grand Dunes Golf Club, Indian Wells Golf Club, Legends Golf Resorts, Myrtlewood Golf Club, Tidewater Golf Club, Thistle Golf Club, Wachesaw Plantation East, Crow Creek Golf Club, River Hills Golf and Country Club, and Pine Lakes County Club.
The Marina Inn at Grande Dunes, Beach Vacations, and Legends Resorts offer "special" accommodation packages for father/son week.
For a little activity away from the fairways, endless attractions are but a short dogleg away. Broadway at the Beach houses 100 boutiques and specialty shops, 16 restaurants (including the Hard Rock Cafe), an IMAX theater and celebrity square nightclub district. Racing fans can check out NASCAR speedway. Also, numerous musical theaters offer an extensive selection, from country to big band. And of course for water lovers, Myrtle Beach is prime territory for scuba diving, surfing and sailing. Whatever your pleasure, you'll find it all along the Grand Strand.
Myrtle Beach, competitive golf and that good old summertime -- what a magical combination for a quality family vacation. Recapture a golf memory and make some new ones when you play The National Father & Son Team Classic. Space will be limited to the first 800 teams, so register early!
